Event Review
"ALL THE BEST GROUP EXHIBITION"
by
GROUP EXHIBITION SOHO GALLERIES
I have been to the SOHO gallery for exhibition.
This SOHO art gallery is an exciting commercial art gallery, established in Sydney in March 1995, and providing Australian artists works.
The SOHO art gallery is opened by the director, Nigel Messenger Who has an experience exceeding 25 years in the art industry and she has the creative and administrative recipe to offer new works on a regular basis from the wealth of Australia’s new and emerging artists in the SOHO Art Gallery.
The SOHO art gallery is being featured special exhibition that is an “all the best group exhibition”.
Currently, the SOHO art Gallery Group Exhibition celebrating 15 years exhibiting innovative contemporary art. So the art gallery shows all of art work that is best art works in 2010. Many people can see the Paintings, Sculpture, Wall Reliefand Framed Works on Paper in there.
This exhibition will be hold from 03-12-2010 to 01-02-2011. And the event is being held in their building which is on the 104 Cathedral Street.
The event started on December 18 for preview and exhibiting to February 1, 2011. But if we want to see that event, we can go from 03-12-2010 to 01-02-2011. The art works are already exhibited by the art director in there.
This event is an annual exhibition. So we can see only once a year but the good thing is that can see all of art work at a time. If we do not have a time to see the all of exhibitions, this event will be good to us. Because this event shows all of art works that are best art works during 2010.
This art gallery is free to enter and watching the art work. Actually, this gallery is a private gallery and if we want to have some art work, we can buy from that gallery. All of art work has a price tag on the art work. But we do not have to feel obligated to buy the art work. Because if we just want to see the art work, the enter fee is a free to everyone.
I think, many people do not come to this art gallery because it is not well promoted. Because the art gallery place is hard to find so I needed check the address and place on the internet by using Google map. And when I went the art gallery, I felt really disappointed by the interior. I imagined about that gallery like a white rabbit gallery. Big building, attractive interior and well organized art work. But that gallery is really different with my imagination. Untidy art placement and all of art work in the small space. I think, this art gallery’s purpose is a selling the art works. So they only focused some people who want to be buying their art work. But they offer their art work to everyone. I knew about that event from the internet website and they are promoting by their website. If we do not know about that art gallery website, we cannot find that event, too. So I think, they need to promotion more by other different ways.
This event is targeted towards whom like art work and want to buy or collect the art work. All of art work is quite high priced. I know, these art works’s artist are quite famous in Australia so the price can be expensive. But I think, ordinary person who does nothave some knowledge about art feel little bit like a sense of alienation from somebody who buy the artwork and can understand the art’s hidden meaning. And the art gallery does not explain any information with the art work. So some art work I could not understand what the artist want to tell with own art work. I think, it is better what they give some information papers or have a docent.
The Blue Lightning Dreaming
by WALANGARI KARNTAWARRA
I have two favorite artworks from this event.
First artwork is a WALANGARI KARNTAWARRA’s artwork. Before I did not know about that artist is really famous artist in Aboriginal Art. He won the 2010 Deadly Visual Artist of the Year Award. When I saw this artwork, I felt really weird. It looks like complicate and confuse and I could feel scared and powerful from these colors. This artwork name is a Blue Lightning Dreaming. And the artwork has a story like a fairy tale.
The Blue Lightning Dreaming story is about two of the most beautiful women in the Dreamtime. They were sisters from the Walpiri nation of Central Australia and their beauty was widely known. One day a group of men from the Pitjantjatjarra nation tried to get the sisters to come to them.
They made red lightning and when the sisters saw it in the sky they became hypnotized and started to walk towards the men far off in the distance. As the red lightning was crackling in the sky my ancestor, an old magic man from Winparrku heard all the commotion and sought to investigate.
To his left he saw the red lightning and looking to his right, he noticed in the distance the two sisters walking in a trance.
Realizing that the men were trying to lure the women, he immediately sent down a bolt of brilliant blue lightning, which broke the spell. The women were saved and became his wives.
When I read that story and saw the artwork, I could see the many of objects in the artwork like beautiful woman, bolt of brilliant blue lightning and etc. It was so impressive and funny. Reading a story in the painting!!! It is amazing. It is not weird artwork anymore to me.
When I saw this art work, I can remind some art movement that is a symbolism. This painting has many objects and it is symbols that come from the story like a bolt of brilliant blue lightning. Before I saw the Aboriginal Art but at that time, I was not interested in that like of artwork. So I thought, it is just traditional and unique patterns. But it might be has a story same with this artwork and If I know that fact, I could be interested about that artwork too. ]I was enjoying finding some special objects and what kind of meaning they have in the painting during the exhibition. Finding symbols are really fun and interesting that help the observation even a small wire.
JD PAPER DOLLS
by JANINE DADDO
The Second artwork is a JANINE DADDO’s artwork.
Janine Daddo paints in a whimsical style that I love. Her large paintings are layered with texture and rich color and over the years she has begun to include more patterns in her work. This makes me love her more than I already did - if that is possible!
Her artwork was a very pleasant experience. While I am often not a big fan of contemporary art, I was however impressed by the works at the gallery, especially that of Janine Daddo. Her style, themes and the vibrancy of her work really captured my eye, heart and imagination. Unlike other artist works that may look better when photographed than actually up close, her individual pieces really stand out and entice the passer-by to stop and observe. The gallery staff, who I found to be very helpful and informative, also pointed out that Janine is now doing metal sculpture as well; some of which was present, and was equally as impressive as her oil and mixed media paintings.
I think, her artwork looks like between impressionism and cubism. She used rich and brilliant color and rough painting technique that looks impressionism work. Also she represented the objects by using some geometric outlines that is similar with cubism.
From this painting, I can see represented participant and I feel some sort of involvement like that the represented participant is happy. And they entice the viewer to feel happy too. Her painting looks like child’s painting so this painting gives some childhood’s memories. And if viewers see this painting, they will be engrossed in nostalgic thoughts of theirs youth.
I like her most of artwork. I can feel the artist’s personality and freedom in the painting and it makes me happy.
I think, all of art work is really good and most of art work is made by Australian so it is a great opportunity to know about Australian art style for me. Before semester, some teacher told to us, usually the Eastern and Western cultures are different, and it is reflected to the art work deposit the genre. I can feel that like of that from this event. It is totally different like sensibility, expression and etc. now, I am studying kind of design in here, but I do not know about Australia’s everything very well. So this event was a good opportunity to understand little bit about Australian art style and culture even I do not have a good eye for art and then could develop my ability to look at art. And during the exhibition, I thought like that if I have much knowledge about art, I can feel more much from these artwork and the meanings will come largely to me. But unfortunately, I could not. But if Anyone with a discerning eye can see the value of this picture right off, this event will be more happy with that exhibition.
