What is a POP ART?

Pop art is a 20th century art movement that developed in the 1960's as a reaction against abstract expressionism. Pop art is inspired and reproduced every objects, such as Campbell Soup cans, comic strips, advertisements and mass produced objects.

The movement inspired a later related style named Capitalist Realism, led by German artist Gerhard Richter.

Where did POP ART occur?

Pop art developed in the USA and Britain. In the USA, it was linked to the wealth and prosperity of the post World War 2.


Who are the leading artists of the POP ART?


Eduardo Paolozzi

Eduardo used images of contemporary consumer items. He thought of pop art as a way to bring art to the people, as well as a way to celebrate everyday life through art.

Andy Wharhol

Andy Wharhol is probably the most celebrated and recognizable pop art artist. Famous for his depictions of Coca Cola bottles, Campbell's Soup Cans and prints made from altered photographs of Marilyn Monroe, Andy Wharhol delighted in finding the beauty and irony in the mundane and ordinary.

Roy Lichtenstein

Roy Litchtenstein is famous for his use of comic-book or graphic-novel-like images in his artwork.

Robert Rauschenberg


Actually he was a painter but he decided to combine traditional paintings with physical objects, creating three-dimensional collages. And from this, he explored new ways like a called Combines.


Claes Oldenburg


Claes Oldenburg explored alternative mediums for sculptures that acted as social commentary. He is famous for his sculpture titled "Soft Toilet."

I think, POP ART is ...

I think, POP ART is a great art movement because I can feel a passion of artist from this art. It is made to create an emotion, comment or a thought from the viewer. Even comments such as "pop art is rubbish" is still a comment and people are talking about it and voicing their opinions. Talking and voicing own opinion means that people understand and feel from that arts. So I think, It is a really living art.
